As shown in the figure, when an object of mass m (kg) is placed on an object of mass M (kg) and the static friction coefficient between the two objects is ¥ìs, the maximum force F (N) that the object above is not slip can be calculated as follows.

If the coefficient of kinetic friction between the lower object and the floor is ¥ìk, the acceleration generated when a force is applied to the two objects is as follows.

F - ¥ìk*(m+M)*g = (m+M)*a

a = (F - ¥ìk*(m+M)*g)/(m+M)

Since the force due to this acceleration becomes the maximum when the friction force between the two objects is equal, the force F can be obtained as follows.

m*a = ¥ìs*m*g

a = ¥ìs*g

(F - ¥ìk*(m+M)*g)/(m+M) = ¥ìs*g

F = (m+M)*¥ìs*g + ¥ìk*(m+M)*g)
