The radius of gyration of area is the square root of the moment of inertia with respect to an axis on the centroid divided by the cross-sectioonal area. For long columns,  it is used as the slenderness ratio, related to the length of a column for determining the buckling load.

For a circular section with its diameter being D, the radius of gyration is :

r = (I/A)^(1/2) = ( (¥ðD^4/64) / (¥ðD^2/4) )^(1/2) = D/4

I : moment of inertia with respect to an axis passing on the centroid (¥ðD^4/64)
A : cross-sectional area (¥ðD^2/4)
