Force acting on a L-shaped gate

Assuming a L-shaped gate having its height H, length L and width B is connected by a hinge as shown in figure, the force F required to hold the gate closed is calculated as below.

¡á Forces due to water pressure
¢¹ Horizontal force
  Fh = (1/2)*¥ñ*g*H^2*W
¢¹ Vertical force
  Fv = ¥ñ*g*H*L*W

¡á Moment at the hinge by the forces above
M = (1/3)*H*Fh + (1/2)*L*Fv

¡á Force to make a resistent moment required
F*H = M
F = M/H = ((1/3)*H*Fh + (1/2)*L*Fv)/H
= (1/6)*¥ñ*g*H^2*W + (1/2)*¥ñ*g*L^2*W
= (1/2)*¥ñ*g*((1/3)*H^2 + L^2)*W
